My Story

Gareth W Smith has been living and surfing in the Wollongong region, on the South Coast of NSW Australia, for most of his life. He began building hollow wooden surfboards almost 20 years ago and then on a whim drew on one some of his boards, and loved the results. GWS Wooden surfboards was created and saw Gareth W Smith's boards and art being sent around the world. Gareth W Smith Art has been created to showcase his art, on surfboards and other mediums such as canvas, paper and wood.

Gareth W Smith board building began after seeing some hollow wooden surfboards online. He began by using a table saw to cut up the kids old bunk bed and an old wooden table top, to build his first board. Gareth W Smith had been "doodling" on his regular boards for many years, but it wasn't until he paired up his wooden boards with his art that something truely unique was born.

Gareth W Smith is in the unique position of making his boards from the start of the process through till the finish. All his boards are unique, with differing types of wood, construction methods, nose and tail blocks, depending on his desired outcome. Gareth W Smith then hand draws on all his art to each board. His art is inspired by nature, the ocean, the waves and it's beautiful creatures. Gareth W Smith uses Mandalas, lines and shapes to create his desired effect. He loves the repeating patterns that can be found in nature, and has been influenced greatly by many indigenous cultures and the symbolism used in their art.
